When the school calendar has several semesters and there are semester and full year classes, it is recommended to lock and unlock terms are they are being used. This is to avoid errors in entering/editing marks or comments in the wrong term.
As an example this is the recommended setup for a school with 2 semesters and semester and full year classes:
